First Flowers

I looked out my window this morning and saw this huge burst of red flowering in the dinky stone circle in my front yard. The last owners must have planted it, but until this morning I'd thought the scrubby stalk was just some overgrown weed. The flower looked so out of place and beautiful among my moss-yard that I got my digital camera out to capture it. I was able to get some really neat shots of the "privates" after accidentally pushing a button and finally discovering the manual focus. The one above is my favorite.

It's not about Bolton

Perhaps the uh, target of my annoyance didn't come out very clear in my last post. The point was not Bolton, (though, yes, I would prefer our reps respect the intention of the international body we created and currently host) but rather, the "We're on vacation" loop-hole giving the administration free reign during one month out of the year. I understand that everyone should get a vacation, but why don't they simply hold the rulings until everyone gets back? I don't understand how this law got passed in the first place, and why, if such things happen once a year in every presidency, has no-one challenged it? Here's a potential presidential nominee on national television, in front of what he hopes to be "his type of voter," declaring his offensive political strategy as: "I'm morally and politically opposed to the administration's policies, but I'll only fight until August, then I'll let them do whatever they want."

Countdown to Democracy

Thanks go out to Greg for the wonderfully uplifting countdown to Bush's exit (spread the love at BackwardsBush.com). Little Georgie is not playing fair at recess. Our representatives are not concerned. Last night Sen. Joe Biden (D-DE), self-proclaimed 2008 presidential candidate was asked whether he was concerned about Bush side-stepping the checks-and-balances approval process and rushing Bolton's nomination, CAFTA, etc. through during recess. "Oh yes," he said, "I'm very concerned, blah blah he's only hurting himself, blah, blah." He was also asked, "did you expect this?" His response: "Oh, we assumed he would." So, let's get this straight, they spent months worth of time railing against the administration and friends only to say, "Well, in August, I'm on vacation, so where were we bombing next? Oh yes, Syria. The world will be okay with that, right? 'Cause I'm in the Hamptons, then, and I really can't be bothered by my constituency. I'm, like, on break." Yes, Delaware. Good luck with that nomination.

Crafts

A few months ago I started creating picture frames as presents for friends and family. The efforts were partly out of neccessity in the midst of our saving-for-house scrimping, but also, I was just annoyed at the Babies R Us price-tag for a spray painted piece of balsawood: $25! So far all my efforts have been for babies and kids, but I just got a bunch of frames on sale and I've run out of people having kids to give them to. I've thought about trying to sell them online, but I've only gotten as far as checking some books out of the library. We'll see. In the meantime though, I'm really enjoying getting into crafting again. It was a part of me that I'd really forgotten about.
